THE LONGEST DRIVE
a golf odyssey

Round 2– sunday, nov 2, 2008

So, yes, this is Royal Canberra, which looks rather nice doesn’t it. In fact pictures don’t do it justice. It’s a ripper. Manicured within an inch of its life, huge monster Oregon pines, kangaroos, a sense of gravitas. Greg Norman went round in 62 shots here (a record) but I recorded 88 of them, which wasn’t super-flash but still a hugely enjoyable 4 hours of golf with my mate Michael “Bags But Not Sandbags” Sandberg who plays off 15 and spends a fair bit of his time smacking old golf balls into Lake Burley Griffin, murdering carp. As you do. That said! don’t know why it's a “Royal” course—or indeed why Australia has “Royal” anything, be they racecourses, hospitals or titanium outhouses. For mine it’s like getting a pat on the head by great aunty Hilda from Shropshire, pleased there’s somewhere she can golf, punt or have a shit when she’s out visiting the colonies. Could be just me.
