THE LONGEST DRIVE
a golf odyssey

Round 4– tuesday, nov 4, 2008

And so another day another 18 holes of golfing goodness, this time at Gold Creek which does not have a creek much less any gold (that I could see) but did once have a cow and its calf die on the par-4 2nd hole during construction. Which is sad, you’ll agree. Fellow player Bruce told me that, he’s a member of Gold Creek and bought the first block when they were up for sale and he helped golf man Bruce Devlin construct the place, and now seems to travel around the world and play golf and not have a job.

(Not that I’m one to talk.)

Post-round went to rugby club’s Melbourne Cup luncheon at the YMCA Yacht Club by the banks of Burley Griffin, at which I gave a speech that seemed to be well-received by about a quarter of the 100 or so people who knew what in Dennis Lillee’s name I was talking about, and with muffled polite laughter and silence by the rest of the folks, containing as it did so many in-club references.  Yah-Yah Newgie? Wha? Lesson: Know Your Audience. Wisely it was decided that the Daphne Benaud gag shouldn’t get a run as several of the attendees could well have been Daphne Benaud.
